Yahoo! is 20 years old

Some news just makes you feel ancient, so I apologize in advance. Yahoo was one of the web’s first big service providers and it has just turned 20 years old. It seems like only yesterday that it was new. The company has gone through a lot in those 2 decades. There have been a lot of ups and downs. That’s probably true of most 20 year olds. They grow up so fast!It was a web directory in the 1990s, then it became a web portal for many early users.

It hit some big bumps with the dot-com bubble collapse and of course a company that we all know today, Google. Somehow it managed to stay around.More recently, it worked out a deal to use Microsoft’s Bing search in place of its own. Under the current CEO Marissa Mayer, Yahoo is doing much better. Some of those early mistakes have been addressed.

It has had quite the 20 year history. Things never stay the same after all. I remember it from the days of Windows 95 and dial-up modems. Thank God we aren’t still using those. Who knows what the company will look like in another few years, or if it will still be around.
